I am pleased to inform you that the delegates of WEA MidState’s Uniserv Council—representing 4,200 public school employees in 42 locals in Kittitas, Klickitat, and Yakima Counties– voted unanimously to support the efforts of SEA members at The Center School, Chief Sealth International High School, Garfield High School, and Orca School to boycott the MAP test.
Please understand that our delegates were not opposed to the MAP per se, but rather the expense, time, effort required to administer standardized tests—of which the MAP is but one example. Further, our delegates wished to note that the data from such standardized tests is often too little, too late, or too narrowly focused to be of any use to a classroom teacher.
In addition, we applaud the courage, vision, and leadership of SEA members in confronting the issue of standardized testing in our public schools.
