Statement in Support of the Seattle Teachers and their Boycott of the MAP Testing

The members of the Coalition to Defend Public Education, Providence, RI, applaud and staunchly support the courageous and well-articulated stand of the Seattle teachers and teachers across the country and the world who, despite the risk to their careers and reputations, decry the over-use and misuse of the NWEA MAP assessment and other similar standardized assessments. Created in order to identify areas of academic weakness for the purpose of improving educational attainment, in reality these tests are a lamentable waste of precious time and resources that need to be spent actually teaching to the real needs and interests of each classroom of students. The NWEA MAP test is not valid or reliable for the purposes for which it is being used—measuring the progress of students and measuring the effectiveness of teachers. It is particularly ill-suited for students with specific learning challenges and for non-native English speakers. The boycott of this testing by teachers, and the opting their children out of this testing by parents are necessary remedies to the misguided attempt to evaluate students and teachers by this inherently flawed means.
